The Source of Life “Water”
Water is the source of life for all living things on earth.
The United Nations General Assembly declared World Water Day on 22 March 1993 with a decision taken today. Celebrated on March 22 every year since 1993, it aimed to draw attention to the clean water problem in the world, protection and reproduction of clean water resources.
22 March 2020
As TIMEX family, we continue to draw attention to the water problem on our planet at every opportunity and continue to work towards the conscious use of water resources.
Through this important day, we want to share some information about water:
- 65% of our body consists of water. In newborn babies, this rate can be up to 78%.
70.9% of our planet is covered with water. 97% of these waters are salty water. 2.7% are found frozen in glaciers.
- Fresh water resources that people can use are only 0.3%.
- There is more water in the atmosphere than any river in the world.
- World water demand is expected to increase 55% by 2050.
- The World Health Organization states that the people can meet their basic needs with approximately 22 liters of water per day,
- 748 million people in the world do not have access to an advanced water resource and 2.5 billion people to an advanced sanitary facility.
- People living in the African and Asian continents have to walk an average of 6 km to accumulate water.
- South African women and girls make a trip to the moon 16 times in total every day just to carry water.
- An average toilet uses 6 liters of clean water for each siphon draw. An average of 75 liters of water is spent for a shower.
- An average of 700 million Chinese drink microbes.
- 3.5 million people die every year due to water-related causes.
- Producing one calorie of food costs around 1 liter of water.
- About 6 liters of water are used to produce 100 grams of plastic.
- It takes about 11 thousand liters of water to produce a single pair of jeans.
- 50 glasses of water are spent to grow oranges and make only one glass of orange juice.
- While it needs about 3500 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram of rice, this figure goes up to 15 thousand liters to produce 1 kilogram of meat. For 1-liter carbonated beverage, this figure varies between 160 and 300 liters.
- Approximately 70% of fresh water used by people is spent for agriculture and animal husbandry.
- 80% or even 95% of the water used in the world is left to nature without treatment.
- Thanks to the developing water filtering and cleaning technology, wastewater is cleaner than some tap water when cleaned.
- Israel purifies and reuses 86 percent of waste water. In this respect, it is the first in the world.
- 5 to 15 million tons of plastic mixes into the oceans by rivers and seas every year, researchers predict that the weight of plastics in water resources may be more than fish in 2050.
Water, which established and destroyed civilizations in world history and sometimes even caused wars, is more valuable than ever. Because of the increasing population and fast consumption, we consume water resources much faster than it should be. If we continue to consume water unconsciously, all living things on our planet will face serious danger in the near future. It is necessary to raise awareness about water consumption and then to spread it to our entire environment. Thus, it is possible to create a more livable world!
